Claudia Sheinbaum to Run as Morena's Candidate in Mexican Presidential Election

Sheinbaum, a Close Ally of Outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, is Heavily Favored to Win

Sheinbaum Will Face Xóchitl Gálvez, the Candidate for the Opposition National Action Party (PAN), in the June 2024 Election

Claudia Sheinbaum has been chosen as the presidential candidate for Mexico's ruling Morena party, according to a poll by Reforma. The decision was driven by polls of Morena party members. She is heavily favored to win the presidency, given her close ties to outgoing leftist President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and her strong support base within the party.

Sheinbaum's selection as Morena's candidate comes as little surprise, as she has been widely seen as the frontrunner for the nomination since López Obrador first endorsed her in 2021. She is a longtime political ally of López Obrador and has served as mayor of Mexico City since 2018. During her tenure as mayor, she has overseen a number of high-profile projects, including the construction of a new subway line and the implementation of a new social welfare program.

Sheinbaum's main challenger in the presidential race will be Xóchitl Gálvez, the candidate for the opposition National Action Party (PAN). Gálvez is a former senator and current deputy for the PAN. She is a vocal critic of López Obrador and has pledged to roll back many of his policies if elected.

The presidential election in Mexico is scheduled for June 2024.
