Buffon Given Uefa Award Champions League Why I Played So Long

Buffon given UEFA award: ‘Champions League why I played so long’

Goalkeeping legend Buffon made his Champions League debut in 1997, he has since played in 129 games.

Italy and Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has been given UEFA’s President’s Award for his ‘exemplary career’ in football.

The 43-year-old, who retired from international football in 2018 after making a record 176 appearances for his country, is widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time.

Buffon won 10 Serie A titles with Juventus and the World Cup with Italy in 2006, but the Champions League eluded him.

Buffon made his Champions League debut in 1997 and has since played in 129 games - more than any other player.

“I've been in the Champions League for 129 games and that's the reason why I played for so long - to try to win it,” he said upon receiving his award.

"I tried my best. I wasn't able to win but I'm really proud to have been able to play for so long, for so many years, at this level.”

Buffon retired this season, but he ended his career on a high note by winning the 2020-21 Coppa Italia with Juventus.

He has been linked with a return to the club as a director once he completes his coaching badges.

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin said: "Gianluigi Buffon is a true legend of the game and an inspiration to millions around the world.

"His exceptional talent, longevity and commitment to football make him a worthy recipient of the UEFA President's Award."
