UI negotiations with building-, food-service workers continue; strike could begin Sunday
Union negotiators met for 10 hours with UI officials Thursday
Negotiations between the University of Iowa and the union representing more than 2,000 building-service and food-service workers continued Thursday for more than 10 hours, and both sides planned to meet again Friday.
UI health system prepares for potential strike
Meanwhile, the university is preparing for the possibility of a strike, which could begin as early as Sunday. UI Hospitals and Clinics on Thursday began notifying patients that appointments after Monday could possibly be affected if workers walk off the job.
Housekeepers, dining workers most affected
The workers most likely to be affected by a strike are housekeepers and dining-service workers. The union represents about 1,200 housekeepers, cooks, and custodians at the UI Hospitals and Clinics, as well as about 800 workers in residence halls, dining halls, and other campus buildings.
Union demands higher wages, benefits
The union is demanding wage increases, improved benefits, and better working conditions. The university has offered raises of 2% to 3%, but the union is seeking 12.5% over three years.

UI officials on Thursday said the university’s offer would make its building-service and food-service workers the highest paid among similar workers in the region.
Both sides optimistic about reaching agreement
Despite the wide gap in their proposals, both sides said they are committed to reaching an agreement and avoiding a strike.
Mediators brought in
Federal mediators have been brought in to help facilitate the negotiations.
Union, UI officials to meet Friday
Negotiations are scheduled to resume Friday morning.
